Lavender is a free web browser for Android that helps you spend your time online on purpose. Pause or limit any site, or whole categories of sites, keep your rules and encrypted notes behind your PIN, and translate pages right on your phone. Nothing is copied to a cloud.

Wellbeing

Spend less time where you don't want to.

  • Pause any site with one tap on the lock in the address bar. It stays quiet until you decide otherwise.
  • Keep whole categories out: adult sites, gambling, scams, dating, drugs, social media, games or news. The lists are built in and work offline.
  • Daily time limits for a site or a whole category. When time's up, a calm page tells you when it opens again.
  • Links, embeds and redirects to a paused site are stopped too, and only the time a page is really in front of you counts.

Privacy

What you do in Lavender stays on your phone.

  • No account to create, no ads, no tracking.
  • No cloud copy: history, bookmarks, rules and notes are never backed up or uploaded.
  • Translate pages on your phone: the page text never leaves it.
  • Private tabs keep no history and have their own cookies.

Two optional features do talk to Google: the warning for dangerous sites (Google Safe Browsing, which you can switch off) and translation, which downloads a language pack once and sends Google usage statistics. The privacy policy explains exactly what is sent and when.

Security

Your choices hold, even when it's tempting.

  • Your wellbeing rules are locked with your PIN. Adding a pause is always quick; lifting one needs the PIN.
  • Notes are encrypted on your phone and open only with your PIN.
  • If you like, Lavender asks for your PIN when it opens, and shows nothing of your tabs until it gets it.
  • Too many wrong tries and Lavender makes you wait longer each time.
  • Pages can only open web addresses, and links to other apps are checked first.

  • Notes from any page: keep a piece of text, or drag a box around part of the screen.
  • Share a page as a PDF, without printing.
  • Share a screenshot of what you see, or of the whole page from top to bottom.
  • Pull down to refresh, a start page with your bookmarks, and a short guide that sets everything up in a minute.

Every feature of Lavender is free, for everyone, and there are no ads. You can support it with a one-time or monthly donation, right from the app (menu → Donate). A donation never unlocks anything extra: it keeps Lavender independent and growing.

Is Lavender really free?

Yes. Every feature is free and there are no ads or subscriptions. Donations are optional and unlock nothing.

Can I use it to protect my child?

Lavender helps anyone who wants to keep certain sites out, and the PIN stops rules from being changed on a whim. It is not a full parental control: it cannot stop other browsers or apps. For a child's phone, use it together with Google Family Link, which can hide other browsers and block installs.

I forgot my PIN. What now?

There is no way to recover it, on purpose. Clearing Lavender's storage in Android's settings removes the PIN together with your rules, tabs and notes, and you can start again.

Does it block everything in a category?

No list is perfect. The category lists come from well-known public blocklists and catch hundreds of thousands of sites, but a brand-new site can slip through. You can always pause a site yourself.

Which phones does it work on?

Android 8.0 and newer, including tablets and Chromebooks. There is no iPhone version.
